| planet at an average temperature of 14 degrees Celsius. Without CO2 our planet would be closer to an average temperature of negative 14 degrees Celsius. CO2 has this affect on our planet's temperature despite being an immensely tiny part of our atmosphere (around 300-400ppm of air are CO2). Since such small amounts of this gas have such drastic effects on our climate it is considered a pollutant when excessive levels of it exist. It's synonymous with iron in our bodies. Our bodies and blood require iron to move oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our body. This element, although very important, only makes up an very small portion of our bodies (0.006% by weight). Small shifts in this amount, can cause serious health problems. Too much iron and it could be considered a "pollutant" as it can damage your organs. As is almost always true, everything in moderation. An excess of pretty much anything is bad. The vast majority of the scientific community involved in climate research agree that climate change is occurring and is heavily influenced by human actions--the majority of people that are unconvinced are the uninformed public and media outlets.
